Kihei going firewise to help prevent wildfires | News, Sports, Jobs

While our collective heart goes out to those on West Side and Upcountry, Kihei Community Association’s charge is the South Maui district.

We are trying to learn from the tragedy there to prevent what happened here.

We too have had extreme wildfire “warnings” in the past, and we also saw no true actions taken to change the situation.

So we are going “firewise.” (See www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Wildfire/Firewise-USA.)

As far as we could determine, there have been just three firewise communities on the island, none in South Maui. We are working to change that now.

Whether it be a compact neighborhood or a larger subdivision, if a few neighbors here want to step up to organize, KCA will be right there with them.

Contact us at kca@gokihei.org. See www.gokihei.org or call (508) 499-9996.
