Charged: David Sellu, 65, a consultant surgeon at the Clementine Churchill Hospital is accused of manslaughter
A senior consultant at a top private hospital appeared in court today charged with manslaughter after a patient died following a routine knee operation.
David Sellu, 65, a consultant surgeon at the Clementine Churchill Hospital in Harrow, is also accused of committing perjury at an inquest into the death of James Joseph Hughes in 2010.
Mr Hughes, 64, flew from his home in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, to the private clinic for surgery in February 2010 but died a week later following complications.
He had complained about being in ‘terrible pain’ before his death from blood poisoning.
Sellu, a former senior lecturer in surgery at Imperial College from 1993 to 2000 and associate professor at a Florida university, appeared in court with members of his family to hear the charges.
Wearing a black suit, the father-of-four, of Hillingdon, north London, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
District Judge Margot Coleman bailed Sellu to appear at the Old Bailey on November 19.
